Join Peter Baumann Sunday, April 15th for “The Changing Human Story”

by Terry Patten

Please join us Sunday, April 15th at 10:00 AM Pacific, for a conversation with Peter Baumann entitled “The Changing Human Story”

What is it to be human, and to explore being human by viewing ourselves as a process rather than as fixed individuals? Peter Baumann is interested in seeing evolution through clear, evolutionary eyes, recognizing us, and life as a constantly-changing process. Without being distracted or confused by idealization or reification, he believes can understand ourselves more clearly and be ourselves more freely.

Baumann says, “We are very different than human beings were even 200  years ago, let alone 1000 or 10,000 or 100,000. We’re links in a chain, and we don’t know where that chain is leading us.” He proposes that we can see this process most clearly if we don’t try to idealize or reify or fixate what it is to be human but instead pay attention to the experience of being human.

In his investigations, he has frequent conversations with a lot of scientists. So the first Being Human conference was an exploration of the sense of self and the decision making process. It focused on neuroscience, perception research, psychological research, and the perspectives offered by deep contemplative practitioners. In Ego: The Book, Peter and Michael engaged some similar inquiries, but in a more speculative and philosophical fashion, emphasizing an evolutionary perspective.

The implications of these investigations is an expansion of understanding, the addition of perspectives. He thinks this can enable us to relax a bit more, to realize that life is to be lived, not constructed or figured out conceptually. Life is simply to be experienced. Peter Baumann says, “our attention wants to be with the process itself. We like to study our processes as separate things but life doesn’t function that way. Individual lives shape culture which shapes individual lives. The more we feel a part of a larger process the less alienated and alone we can feel.”

About Peter Baumann

After joining the musical group Tangerine Dream in 1971, Peter Baumann toured with the band worldwide and recorded multiple Gold records until 1981. Mr. Baumann moved to New York in 1982 and founded the record company, Private Music. He served as CEO of Private Music until 1994 when the company was sold to RCA.

Peter has been happily married for 27 years and is father to three grown children. He lives in San Francisco, California and serves as director of several privately held real estate and natural resource companies, as well as the Baumann Foundation, a San Francisco-based think-tank that explores the experience of human well-being in the context of cognitive science, evolutionary theory, the contemplative tradition and philosophy. Through his foundation he has helped fund research and foster wide-ranging dialog, including the recent very exciting “Being Human”conference. He also serves on the board of CIIS and is a Fellow at the Mind & Life Institute. He is also the co-author, with Michael Taft, of the recent book: Ego: The Book: The Fall of the Twin Towers and the Rise of an Enlightened Humanity.

What Does a Higher “We” Make Possible?

by Terry Patten

Is something new happening right now, in the shared consciousness of certain gatherings of sincere practitioners? Is a new “We” manifesting, one that doesn’t define itself over against “Them” or any “others” at all?  That’s what Thomas Hübl and I explored in a wide-ranging dialog, the second time he has appeared in this series.

Thomas and I began by invoking a group field, in which we invited everyone to open and settle into what is, just as it is, without changing a thing—and then to include each other in our awareness, and notice the creative aliveness of  the present moment. And Thomas helped transmit sensitivity to of that shared field and the possibility of a shared awareness, through which a larger intelligence can show up, allowing us to speak an intelligence that surprises even us.

From there, we dived into this new phenomenon, as we each have experienced it in our spiritual work. We explored what the conditions are that make it possible, for an individual to participate in it, for a group to co-create it. We looked at how this New “We” might allow a higher intelligence to find its way through us into life.

It was a very lively conversation, and it leaves me contemplating some interesting questions. I first awakened to this possibility through actual group processes, in which a powerful shared field of awareness drew us together into a heightened state of consciousness.

But as I continue to practice and to serve the evolution of consciousness and culture I am working with groups that sometimes connect by phone, sometimes online in writing via forums and chats, and sometimes in person. With groups of more advanced and committed practitioners, I’ve noticed that the “We” finds its way into being through all these forms, that it even persists between occasions, and that something builds and lives over time among us.

Thomas suggested that he believes this is how human beings can connect to the higher intelligence that really can effectively address global warming and the other crises that face us. In our experiments with this New “We” we may be helping pioneer some of the presses through which we can rise to our evolutionary challenges.

Thomas is in the US from now until April 7th, teaching in New York, the SF Bay Area, Seattle & Olympia, Vancouver and Boulder. A schedule of his appearances is here.

Sunday, March 25th “Birthing a New ‘We’” with Thomas Hübl

by Terry Patten

  •  Note: This broadcast will start at a special time: 5 PM Pacific

Please join us Sunday, March 25th at 5:00 PM Pacific, for a conversation entitled “Birthing A New We” – Evolutionary Ways of Creating Community, Society, Spirituality

To lead an awake, integral existence in the midst of daily life is a great challenge. How do we express the timeless wisdom and our insights in an alive, awake day to day living? How does our awakeness manifest as our reality?

Currently a “new We” is emerging more and more on the evolutionary edge of spiritual culture. We are starting to experience a new awakening that takes us beyond previous forms of individual experience: thinking and feeling from a larger field, transparent communication, recognizing experiential spaces inside people and groups, naturally extended perceptual abilities, higher levels of synchronization and transcendence—all of these are just a few of the many signs we are seeing of a new era in the ways we can be with each other.

What tools can be used to tap into this “new We” and what might organizations and communities begin to look like as it comes on line more fully? What will presence, transparency, compassion, integral spirituality be like in time to come? How will we live and work if we radically make awakening the core? And what will  it mean for our communities and for the larger human collective?

Thomas Hübl and Terry Patten will discuss Thomas’ insights about working with such dynamics and show us what is helpful on an awakening path in order to access new dimensions of awareness, gain insight into the functioning of collective fields, guide others in their processes and to perceive from new points of view.

About Thomas Hübl

Thomas Hübl is a contemporary spiritual teacher of uncompromising clarity, which brings the enlightened potential of a new “Culture of WE” into the light. His workshops and trainings invite people to experience a deeper dimension of self-awareness and individual responsibility. Radical transcendence of ego opens the door to deeply authentic expression, service to the world and stable relationship with the absolute. Experiencing a driving inspiration to evolve, people give their gifts to the world in concrete ways.

He founded the immensely popular Celebrate Life! Festival and has organized and led several large healing events which have brought together thousands of Germans with many Israelis to acknowledge, face, and heal the cultural shadow left by the Holocaust. He founded the Academy of Inner Science whose programs teach not only on personal transcendence, but also active responses to the postmodern challenges of the human condition.

Drew Dellinger’s Passionate Hieroglyphic Stairway

by Terry Patten

Imagine a conversation between a political activist and a spiritual practitioner.

Now imagine another conversation between a political activist and a poet.

Now put each of those two conversations inside two human beings, and ask them to take the conversation right to the edge.

Something like that is what occurred this past Sunday when I spoke with Drew Dellinger. He is a poet and prophet with a passion about political activism. And, as you know, I’m a spiritual teacher with a similar passion.

When we talked, we gave voice to some of the themes and issues that have been a subtext for Beyond Awakening since its very inception

And, Drew read his marvelous poem, Hieroglyphic Stairway — one of the great poems iconic poems of our time. I invite you to enjoy a video version now:

Join Drew Dellinger and Terry Patten for “Love Letter to the Milky Way” on Sunday, March 11th

by Terry Patten

Please join us Sunday, March 11th at 10:00 AM Pacific, for a conversation entitled Love Letter to the Milky Way with Drew Dellinger

New planetary movements are unfolding at the confluence where ecology, social justice, and cosmology meet. At the heart of these emerging transformations is a vision of the world as sacred and connected. The entire Earth community is calling us to activate our creativity and live our lives as the embodied expression of connection and compassion. According to Drew, “the future is a poem inside our pen.”

* How can we respond to this call?

* How can we bring forth our creativity in service of the planet, the people, and the future of all species?

Drawing on 20 years of study with prominent environmental thinker Thomas Berry, and his in-depth survey of the writings, speeches, and sermons of Martin Luther King Jr., Dellinger will elucidate underlying principles connecting ecology, cosmology, and justice. Dellinger will describe strategies for change that tap into the power of dream, the power of story, the power of art, and the power of action.

About Drew Dellinger

Drew is an internationally known speaker, poet, writer, and teacher who has inspired minds and hearts around the world, performing poetry and keynoting on ecology, social justice, cosmology, and democracy. Dellinger is also a consultant, publisher, and founder of Planetize the Movement.

Dellinger has presented at over 1000 events around the world and has shared podiums and stages with luminaries such as Alice Walker, Cornel West, Thomas Berry, Danny Glover, Ani Difranco, Chuck D, Eve Ensler, and many others.  He has been called “a national treasure,” by Joanna Macy and “one of the most creative, courageous and prophetic poets of his generation,” by Cornel West.

Dellinger’s award-winning book of poems, Love Letter to the Milky Way (www.lovelettertothemilkyway.com), now in its fifth printing, has devoted readers on six continents. His work has been cited and quoted in venues ranging from prison workshops to climate change hearings before the U.S. Congress.

As a consultant, Dellinger helped develop and design the Pachamama Alliance’s Awakening the Dreamer, Changing the Dream Symposium, now used in 60 countries, in 9 languages.

He has taught at numerous colleges and graduate schools, including John F. Kennedy University, where he was Associate Professor and Director of the Program in Social Ecology. Dellinger studied closely with Thomas Berry for twenty years, and is currently writing a book on the cosmology of Martin Luther King Jr.
